The Psychoanalytic Act Study Event 2026

In his 1967/68 seminar The Psychoanalytic Act, weeks after his ‘Proposition to the School 9th October 1967’ Lacan addresses the question of the act wherein the analyser moves to take up a position as the analyst. Arguably Seminar XV introduces a radical change in our approach to the question of the position required to practice psychoanalysis. It moves the limits of analytic practice beyond a focus on sense determined by the pleasure principle to a practice engaging with jouissance and a non-knowledge structured around the objet a.

We can say that this development in Lacan’s teaching moves it radically further into the question of the register of the Real in psychoanalytic practice. Later seminars such as RSI and The Sinthome can be read as representing what emerges from the interrogation of the question of the psychoanalytic act.

The in-person Study Event organised by the Irish School for Lacanian Psychoanalysis invites you to attend to work on these questions and texts in their challenge today to psychoanalytic practice and its articulation.
